Katalon Studio almost entirely unresponsive

I found some similar reports here but they had all been closed after a year of getting no replies.

I am using Katalon for the first time. The three buttons in the START pane (New Project, Open Project and Clone Git Project") are unresponsive, and the “New > Project” menu option is disabled (which is inconsistent with the button, so looks like a bug). Menu options such as “File > New Sample Project > Sample API Tests Project” or “Help > About” are enabled but clicking on them has no effect. I can however close the application.

I am using Katalon 8.4.0 on Ubuntu 18.04, running it from the command line. When I start it up, I get these warnings:

Are you using openjdk8?
What this command shows?

$ java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_332"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_332-b09)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.332-b09, mixed mode)

Prior to 8.4.0, Katalon used to immediately throw an error message if a wrong java version was in use.
Starting with 8.4.0 it apparently attempts to start but hang …

java -version gives this output:

openjdk version "11.0.15" 2022-04-19

you have to install openjdk8 (and switch to it)
read the docs carefully:

All good now, thanks. I OpenJDK8 installed but I needed to switch to it.
